Interview with April Kelley
1) Tells us a bit about your latest WIP.
I’m working on an M/M Paranormal series. The first book is called Leave it All (Saint Lakes #1) and it will be out November 2015.
Here’s a little bit about the series.
2) What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
The most surprising thing I’ve learned in creating my books is how incredibly therapeutic it is to write. The writing process is essential for my mental health.
3) Who has been the biggest influence in your writing career and how?
Bronwyn Heeley. We became fast friends even before I got my publishing contract. It’s been wonderful to ask questions and have someone to bounce things off of through-out my authoring journey.
4) When beginning a new series, do you prefer to stay in relative distance of your comfort zone or hurl yourself into the unknown and research?
I have a Bachelor’s degree in History so I’m no stranger to research, however, I do like to know what my characters know before really beginning a series.
5) How much of your own personality/mannerisms come into play in your characters?
I supposed all authors would like to think we create unique individual’s that have their own personality, but really we all are limited to what we know about ourselves and others. My characters are a culmination of myself and other people I know. I don’t do it on purpose though. The character’s personalities sort of happen as I write.
6) From the start, what was your most successful method of reaching your readers? What “false paths have you traveled?
I’m still trying to figure this one out actually. Still taking those false paths. Personally speaking though, blog tours and hosting other authors really helps get your name out there far better than social media. The most important thing though, is building a backlist. The more books you write, the more books a reader is able to find. Plus, readers are always looking for something good to read. It’s best just to give it to them.
7) What has been the strangest comment you’ve received from your readers?
I can’t really say I’ve had a strange comment. I can say I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the comments and the love they have for my books. It’s truly amazing and humbling every day.
8) If you were starting over, knowing what you know now, what would you do differently?
I don’t really know yet. I just got started on this crazy journey in February of this year. Still, taking those false paths, like I said.
9) Give us your point of view on self-publishing vs. traditional publishing. What changes do you foresee for the future?
Personally, I’m doing both. I chose both to expand my horizons. There are good and bad things to either publishing method. Each author has to way those for themselves and make a decision accordingly. I think there will be more sites popping up that will help the authors who choose self-publishing. Site’s like Amazon.
